The world first met Zach Roloff when his family starred in the captivating television series Little People, Big World. Zach, 27, was born with achondroplasia, which is the most common form of dwarfism. Recently, Zach and Tori Roloff welcomed their newest addition to the family named Jackson.
This adorable little boy is doted upon by his parents. Tori, who is an average sized woman, and Zach, who is a dwarf, knew before starting their young family that their children could also be diagnosed with achondroplasia.
But since all babies are miracles from God, the pair proceeded with getting pregnant. No matter the outcome, they would infinitely love their precious bundle.
Now that Jackson has been diagnosed with achondroplasia, Zach said his own experiences will help him guide Jackson down this life path. Zach said he grew up being called names and being left behind.
“I look at my childhood and being a boy on the farm, it was a little tough because boys are very alpha-doggy and follow the pack. I was always chasing the back and way behind the pack. It was tough.»
Males who have achondroplasia grow to an average height of 4 feet, four inches and live a normal lifespan. However, babies born with achondroplasia do often have breathing problems and experience delays in muscle development.
Despite little Jackson’s potential for health issues, he will be thoroughly loved and cherished as a wonderful blessing. Zack said he will make sure Jackson knows how special he is, not because of his dwarfism, but simply because of who he is.
“You have to encourage a dwarf child a little more because it will take them five steps to do what others can do in two. But I knew, dwarf or not, I was going to parent my child with the mentality that not everyone gets a trophy. You have to earn it.”
Zach and Tori also feel that today’s society will be more accepting of Jackson and his achondroplasia, unlike what Zach succumbed to growing up. Zach continues to coach soccer and will serve as a solid role model for his son who will see that dwarfism cannot hamper him unless he allows it to.
“The world is changing. People are more open to diversity. Whatever he wants to do, we’re going to find a way to help him do it. That’s our job in life now.”
As the couple embraces their new family of three and looks to the future, they hope Jackson enjoys health and happiness. As his parents, they’ll help him achieve that. Congratulations on your new bundle of joy!
