Craig and Kimberly Fugate figured they were done having children. Kimberly was in her early 40s and the couple already had a lovely 10-year-old daughter, Katelyn. But God and nature apparently had other plans.
When Kimberly found out she was pregnant again, she was already 13 weeks along. If that wasn’t enough of a shock, what the doctor said next left the couple’s jaws on the floor – they were expecting triplets!
“It’s all been rather overwhelming when you think about how many changes will have to be made,” Kimberly said. “But I am just trying to take everything one day at a time. I know it will all work out.”
As is common with births of multiples, Kimberly went into labor early at 28 weeks. What happened in the delivery room, though, is truly extraordinary.
Kimberly had just delivered the three babies when the medical team said something that left her stunned:
“They had gotten the three out, and they said, ‘More feet,’” Kimberly recalled. “I said, ‘No!’ It was an instant shock.”
That’s right – Kimberly and Craig are now the proud parents of four identical quadruplet girls!
It’s rare for a couple to have identical quadruplets, but what makes the Fugates’ case even more amazing is that Kenleigh Rosa, Kristen Sue, Kayleigh Pearl, and Kelsey Roxanne were conceived without the assistance of IVF.
Their doctor, James Bofill, was shocked when he learned a fourth baby had been hiding in the womb.
“I was very embarrassed, obviously,” he said. “The news was sent to me by one of my fellows. I thought she was kidding.”
A year after the birth of their four girls, Kimberly spoke about the shock of learning she was bringing home four babies as well as the joy her daughters have brought into her life.
“Just getting up in the morning and seeing the smiles on their faces, hearing them coo at me, and listening to them babble at each other — the joy is overwhelming.
“I know every mom is partial to her babies, but I feel like I have the prettiest babies with the prettiest smiles. And those dimples!
“The babies were the biggest surprise of my life, and I couldn’t imagine my life without them.
“I believed that God picked me to have these quadruplets, and I felt that He would take care of them and allow them to survive. To see how far they’ve come makes me feel very blessed.
“I feel very lucky, like the luckiest mom in the whole world.”
Who are we to argue with Mother Nature? She obviously had great plans for this wonderful family!
