Sir Roger Moore, the English actor best known for his portrayal of James Bond in several movies, has died at the age of 89, according to his family. He passed away early Tuesday morning after a brief battle with cancer.

Roger headlined seven films in the popular spy franchise, including Live and Let Die and The Spy Who Loved Me.

Born on October 14, 1927, he was first introduced to acting in 1945 while attending the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. After a few small roles, he signed a seven-year contract with MGM. However, he only stayed with the studio for two years before signing with Warner Bros.

He shot to fame thanks to his work on television, with Ivanhoe, The Alaskans, Maverick, The Saint, and The Persuaders from 1958 to 1972. From 1973 to 1985, he became a household name thanks to the seven Bond films in which he starred.

In 2003, he became a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire thanks to his charity work.

He leaves behind his wife Kristina, as well as two sons and a daughter. His family is planning a funeral in Monaco, which will be held within the next few days.
