Gloria Shuri Nava met her boyfriend Ali online. Gloria makes YouTube videos. When Ali saw them, he was smitten by her, and the two began talking, then eventually started dating.
There was just one “problem,” but it wasn’t theirs — it was other people’s. Every time the two would go out together in public, they would get ridiculous comments from strangers about Gloria’s body.
She penned a heartfelt essay to her bullies telling them to stop passing judgment on her because she is overweight and her boyfriend is thin.
“We’ve been dating for 18 months, and wherever we go — whether we’re walking hand in hand through the mall, airport, or down the street in his hometown (Glasgow, Scotland) or mine (San Jose, California) — we get confused looks that say, ‘He can do better than her!’” she wrote.
People leave horrible comments on her YouTube channel as well whenever they see the couple together.
People have told Gloria that it’s great Ali can see “past her looks,” that Ali must be blind, or that he is doing Gloria a favor by being with her. None of them consider that Ali might be interested in Gloria because of how she looks, not in spite of it!
Many of Gloria’s ex-boyfriends liked how she looked, but ended the relationship because of constant bullying. Fortunately, Ali and his family are completely devoted to Gloria.
“Ali is the best thing that’s ever happened to me. He makes me feel like I’m good enough all of the time,” she said.
