The end of your fancy knot should have a small loop that is about the width of your index finger.
Once you have your string tied correctly, you are going to shimmy it in through the corner of the driver’s side window. This will be the right side of the window. There is usually a point at the corner, which will allow you to maneuver the string inside the door.
When the string is partially inside the window, you will use both hands to move it in a seesaw motion, which will slowly move the string further down the window and closer to where the inside lock is. This part of the process may take some intense concentration because you will want to move it so the loop in the string is heading toward the lock.
Next, you will use your best aim to get the loop over the lock and as you are doing this you’ll start to pull the ends of the string so the loop tightens around the lock. When you feel like the loop is secure around the lock, you will gently pull up on it, which should naturally unlock the car door. The key to this part is to be gentle and cautious before you make any quick movements. All it takes is one too-fast move and you’ll have to start all over again. And let’s face it, there is a good chance that you are already late for something so you’ll want to save as much time as possible.
This is a handy little tip to have in what can be a very challenging and scary situation. If you’ve been locked out of your car when you have to be somewhere it can be a panicky moment, especially if your wallet or purse is stuck in the car as well. You will want a trick like this to get you back in action as soon as possible.
Commenters noticed that this trick will only work on certain cars, as the design of vehicle locks is constantly changing…
“Works only with old cars with a button like that.”
And some had advice on where else to hide a key…
“I use a key….. joking aside this wouldn’t work on mine, it’s got no knob on the button. I also have a hidden key on the car.”
