We always hear stories about shelter dogs and the odd places that they seem to find themselves in. They can found wandering through the streets alone and in some instances, they are also found tied to various items that no animal should ever find themselves attached to. While these animals will often receive the happy endings that they deserve, this is not always what ends up taking place.
Litchfield Hills Veterinary Animal Hospital recently went through just such an experience. The manner in which this dog was discovered is utterly heartbreaking, as the animal was left in a cage outside of the hospital. The dog was clad in a red bandanna and the person (or persons) responsible for leaving him in this predicament had attached a note to the animal in order to shed some further light on the situation.
Since the staffers had never seen a dog who had been left on the premises with a note attached before, they were understandably curious. Fatty McFat is the dog’s name and according to the note, his owner is homeless. This male pitbull did not have a microchip when he was dropped off and the note reduced the staff to tears, as it was written from the perspective of Fatty.
The dog’s aggression was explained away by the owner, as Fatty was only acting out because he was afraid. His owner did not want to give him away, but once they were rendered homeless and diagnosed with a disease, they no longer had the ability to provide the proper care for the animal. The owner had even attempted to re-home the dog, but with no success.
Fatty appears to have lived a good life before he was dropped off and there was nothing about the situation that suggests any sort of abuse or neglect. The note asked the vet hospital not to judge the owner because they tried their best. The Simon Foundation is a no kill and non profit shelter and they have tried their best to track down the dog’s former owner to see if they can provide any assistance.
A Connecticut dog owner was so down on luck, he or she felt they had no other choice but to leave their beloved dog abandoned with a heartbreaking note explaining why.
Early Monday morning, an anonymous call to Harwinton Animal Control revealed to staff that a dog was left outside the Litchfield Hills Veterinary Hospital.
Veterinary technician, Erin Barrows walked behind the building and found a wire crate placed in the shade beneath a tree. On top of the crate, a large bag of dog food. Inside, tipped over food and water bowls, blankets, toys, and a very frightened pit bull wearing a red bandana.
“My name is Fatty McFat,” the note began. “I am aggressive only because I’m scared.”
The note goes on to explain that Fatty’s owner fell ill and became homeless, eventually having no choice but to abandon the dog he or she “loves very much.”
According to the note, the dog’s owner attempted to rehome him on several occasions, contacted police, the dog warden, and local veterinarians for assistance, but that “no one cared” and “no one would help.” After living in a car for 2 months, Fatty McFat’s owner felt they had no choice, hoping that be abandoning him, he would finally be treated with care, dignity, and love, no matter the outcome.
We are happy to report that the dog’s owner has been located and Harwin Animal Control is working to provide the two of them with the support that they require. While this situation certainly had a heartbreaking beginning, it seems as if it is headed for a heartwarming conclusion. With any luck, the owner will be helped back onto their feet and be given the chance to take Fatty back home for good.
