Paddy Forbes took his family on vacation to Egypt this February. The father from the United Kingdom brought along his 6-year-old son, Tommy-Lee. The boy’s school claims the father did not notify his son’s head teacher before the vacation.
When he returned, the father was shocked to hear that the school had fined him £60 (which is about $77) for not telling the teacher first. Paddy, however, believes he did notify the instructor.
The father agreed to pay the fine, but he was going to do it in his own special way.
“It’s a ridiculous rule designed to punish working-class families anyway. I can’t afford to take everyone away during half-term,” Paddy told The Mirror. “I came into a bit of money at the time, and we may not have got another chance to go to somewhere like Egypt. I told the school in advance that I would be taking Tommy-Lee, but of course I knew they would fine me anyway. I just took it on the chin,” he said.
The father believes the opportunity to go on vacation, which is financially rare for the family, is just as important as Tommy-Lee’s education.
“I was aware I wouldn’t get away with it, but I made the decision I thought was best for Tommy-Lee. It was a spur-of-the-moment booking while I could afford it,” he said. “Where is he going to learn more about the world? Sitting in a classroom in Swansea or at an Egyptian temple?”
As revenge, the father decided to pay the fine in pence, which is the United Kingdom’s equivalent of the American penny. Paddy knows the payment won’t hold since the Royal Mint only allows pence to be used up to 20 pence. However, the father believes he made his point clear.
“He was so excited to be in Egypt and I wouldn’t have wanted to deny him that opportunity,” he said.
