Evolution has played a very important role on our physiological appearance. We know that lighter colored eyes are a mutation, but after thousands of years there are still things which amaze us. The inhabitants of the Solomon Islands have dark skin. However, in recent years there have been many children born with dark skin, but with blond hair.
Scientists from the United States and England decided to investigate this strange occurrence and to do that they traveled to the islands, where they took DNA samples. In one month they collected around 1000 samples to analyze the genome and they published the results in Science magazine.
It seems that there is a gene responsible for this new mutation and it is the only place in the world where it exists. Many chromosomes show an enzyme which affects pigmentation and the scientists have named the gene TYRP1. This combination of skin and hair color is the most recent racial mutation and it’s considered to originate from Oceania.
