You’ve probably heard the term «detox» before. You might be thinking this is something that only Hollywood celebrities do when partaking of a luxurious spa retreat, but this is something everyone can do to benefit their body’s health and appearance.
A detox-cleanse removes environmental toxins and harmful substances from the body and repairs the damage from an unhealthy diet. A one to two week detox-cleanse can also have a balancing effect on hormone levels that are out of alignment due to stress.
So who would profit in general from a detox cleanse? In principle, everyone could do with one every now and then. But they can be particularly beneficial if you have noticed the following symptoms:
- blemished skin
- weight gain
- tiredness
- headaches
- digestion problems
- erratic mood swings
- joint pain
But it is also useful for your body to detox at regular intervals as a preventative measure.
Here’s how a detox-cleanse works:
It actually starts quite some time before the actual detoxification. You begin by avoiding foods that have an acidifying effect on the body. These include white flour, milk, coffee, black tea, cheese, meat, alcohol, fast food and candy.
In the last two days before the start of your detox-cleanse, eat exclusively fruit and vegetables. This helps your stomach to not have to work so hard in the process of digestion.
On the first day, do a colonic irrigation with a hydro-colonic. Alternatively you can also use bitter salt to empty the intestines. During this time you should only consume natural foods. For drinks, stick to water or herbal teas.
Of course there are specific foods that are especially effective for cleansing the various organs in the body that are responsible for ridding the body of toxins.
Kidneys
For targeted detoxification of the kidneys you should eat a lot of fruit or drink smoothies. In addition, parsley, cabbage, ginger, turmeric and pumpkin seeds are recommended.
Intestines
To clean the intestines even faster and to give additional support to the detox process, you should include spinach, brussels sprouts, garlic, chia seeds, fruit, lemon, apple cider vinegar, avocados, broccoli and green tea in your diet.
Liver
The liver is the most important of the body’s cleansing organs, and we have only one. Therefore, we should be careful not to put too much strain on the liver with too frequent or excessive alcohol consumption, for example. For the liver to detox really well, you should consume garlic, grapefruit, beets, carrots, green tea, green leafy vegetables, avocados, apples, quinoa, buckwheat, broccoli, lemons, limes, walnuts, cabbage and turmeric.
Pancreas
To get the pancreas back in top form, you should start your day with lemon, kiwi fruit, pineapple or papaya juice. It is also helpful to increase the amount of vitamin B-rich leafy vegetables in your diet. Further, hot showers and baths can contribute to stress reduction.
To boost the detoxification process even further, you could seek out a special detox massage, do some lightweight yoga, or kick back in the sauna. Just try it once. Your body will thank you.
