Christopher Maloney wanted to audition for The X Factor UK, but he always seemed to be holding himself back.
In the video below, posted on September 8, 2012, the 34-year-old customer-services adviser explains, “I’ve never applied for anything like this before. It’s just — it took me five years to actually build up the courage to apply.”
When he walks onto the stage and introduces himself to the judges, it’s clear just how petrified he feels. His hand shakes erratically as he holds up the microphone. His voice is soft.
He reveals that his grandmother, Pat, is backstage to hear him perform “The Rose,” by Bette Midler. He says, “The song that I’m singing was played at my grandad’s funeral and that meant a lot to me. It was a celebration of his life and this means a lot to me, so that’s why I feel like I want to sing it today for you.”
He takes a deep breath and tries to stop trembling before starting his performance.
He starts to sing, and within the first few notes, the judges are wowed by the power in his voice.
As the song goes on, his voice seems to get stronger, his nerves appear to settle, and he and most of the audience become emotional, their eyes teary.
Eventually, the music stops and his performance ends with a standing ovation from every teary-eyed person in the room, including all four judges. Christopher collapses in tears, still unable to believe that he sang in front of the entire crowd and on national TV.
